Singer songwriter John Clinebell works on his music almost every day. He'll be the first to admit to you that he'd rather start writing a new tune than play old ones or covers. For his first album, Stomping Grounds, John recorded rhythm tracks for 24 songs. It wasn't until most of the songs were 3/4 finished that he decided to put the ten best of them on that disc. "Number" was written while he was in the studio for Stomping Grounds, and it turned out to be one of the disc's highlights. By the time his debut album was mastered and pressed, Clinebell already had another 40 song demos ready to screen for his next album. Of course many of them will never see the light of day (or ears of anyone), still this shows just how much John enjoys the songwriting process, incorporating it into his daily life. He thinks the best way to write music is spontaneously. Most of what he considers his best material was song written within 5-10 minutes. The majority of his songs come together from a melody in his head that he starts to sing along to. After he figures out a melody and a few words (even filler ones), John will pick up his guitar and start sketching out the chords that compliment the vocalizations. That's not to say that he won't muse over lyrics or an arrangement, but John keeps the creativity rolling by focusing on moving forward with his compositions; trying out new techniques and styles to keep things fun and interesting. He's showing that you can have fun while pursuing a career in what he loves.
